Volunteer days essential to Good Shepherd ministries

Volunteer efforts at Good Shepherd Gracenter

The newly created San Francisco Chapter of Mayfield Senior School Alumna Association carries on the Mayfield tradition of providing volunteer service to Good Shepherd. Mayfield has been providing the service days to Good Shepherd Shelter in Los Angeles for nearly 20 years. Now, with the formation of the San Francisco chapter, Mayfield has set its sites on Good Shepherd Gracenter. The San Francisco alumna brought their culinary arts skills to Gracenter recently and had a fun day of cooking with the women in residence there.

Another volunteer event at Gracenter in April brought together women in residence with some of their family members for a work day of weeding and gardening.

Volunteer service at Maryhurst

A number of companies came to the aid of Maryhurst during National Volunteer Week in April. Volunteers from Humana, Constellation Energy, Civil Design, Inc. and Strategic Wealth Designers helped spruce up and beautify the community-based cottages on the Maryhurst campus.

Another volunteer, NBC Racing Analyst and former horse racing jockey Donna Barton Brothers, teaches mindfulness and yoga to the girls in residence at Maryhurst.  Young women at Maryhurst have suffered severe neglect and abuse and are among the most traumatized young women in Kentucky. Donna says she feels a connection to the girls at Maryhurst. She feels the connection so strongly that she obtained her yoga teaching certificate just so she could teach yoga at Maryhurst every Tuesday night.
