Draft of letter to legislators
“We cannot solve the climate crisis. We must stand up to it.” (Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change)
Dear (Name),
Thank you–deep, sincere thanks for the work you have done and the efforts you are now making to assure better living conditions for your constituents and all the people of this beautiful country.
With heartfelt urgency, I call your attention now to the 2023 reauthorization of the Farm Bill. The door is open to you! Stand up to climate change by passing a climate-adjusted Farm Bill.
You are aware of the recent IPCC report and you know that reliable science indicates we must reduce emissions in half by 2030 in order to assure a livable planet for ourselves and future generations.
The 2023 Farm Bill offers a “last chance” legislative opportunity to lower emissions in the agriculture sector, the highest emitter of methane and nitrous oxide, highly toxic GreenHouse gases. Did you know that industrial agriculture drives about 1/3 of climate change? (Peter Lehner, Earth Justice, July 2023)
It is imperative that the 2023 Farm Bill be a climate bill. Those who grow the fruits, vegetables, and nuts—the foods we depend on—must get the resources and support—economic, technical, and research—to tend the soil and grow the crops in climate-challenged conditions.
These are not partisan challenges. They affect every person in this country. I count on you to give utmost attention, study, dialogue, and prayer in order to deliver a Farm Bill that
- Lowers emissions in the agriculture sector which includes not only farms but also our food system, forestry, water and conservation.
- Safeguards food assistance to hungry people in our country.
- Gives strong, effective support to farmers who grow the fruits and vegetables we depend on for our everyday meals.
- Delivers robust, effective assistance to beginning farmers at a time when many US farmers are rapidly nearing retirement age;
- Fosters ongoing research and development of organic and regenerative farming practices.
This is a big order. I/we are counting on you to deliver it in 2023. Five years from now is too late. To put it off until the next update of the Farm Bill is not an option. The time of choice is now. Late as it is.
Sincerely and in active hope,
