Intercessions for World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation

Intercessions for World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation September 1

and Season of Creation September 1 to October 4 Feast of St Francis of Assisi

(Some of these intercessions are according to this year’s theme, and some are not.  As mentioned in the article in Items of Interest, the themes for the year are:  planet earth week one; humanity week two; sky week three; water week four.  Some intercessions fit a theme.  Others could be used as you wish).

For Mother Earth who sustains us, gives us life and beauty and who now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted upon her.  We pray to the Lord:

For environmentalists, recyclers, and advocates –we give thanks for their commitment and pray that their efforts to preserve the Earth for future generations are successful.   We pray to the Lord

That we have the wisdom to choose ways of living which are good for the climate; the needs of future generations; and the health of the Earth. We pray to the Lord

That the Spirit of God deepen our awareness of the nobility and duty of caring for creation through small daily acts.   We pray to the Lord

That the work of international bodies and non-government organizations who seek to combat climate change and bring peace and relief amidst violence and turmoil be supported – We pray to the Lord.

That we recognize climate as a common good, belonging to all and make changes in life style, production and consumption to combat global warming—we pray to the Lord.

For all indigenous peoples may their lives be held sacred, their lands protected and their voices heard and honored, we pray to the Lord

For the wisdom to know that care for one another and our care for the earth reflects God’s care for all creation, we pray to the Lord.

For the most vulnerable of people who are suffering most from the deterioration of the human and natural environment

For the millions of climate change refugees who have lost their homes, their livelihood, their security and have no place to go, we pray to the Lord.

That we may learn live simply in this consumer society and to trust in God’s loving providence—we pray

That we may be moved to actions that teach us simplicity in this consumer society leading to trust in God’s loving providence.

O God of creation, for the grandeur and beauty of plant Earth: We give you thanks

Planet Earth feeds us, clothes us and provides for us.  May we be mindful of this gift and protect it; We pray to the Lord

That fire may be used to replenish our forests and stores of energy rather than destroying them we pray

That we as communities and individuals grow in awareness of how our use of energy and the burning of fossil fuel is destroying our planet, we pray

That we as communities and individuals seek out creative ways to reduce the amount of energy we use, we pray

For those who do not have access to clean water and who face regular water shortages. Lord hear our prayer.

For greater accountability and transparency when public water systems are threatened. We pray

For those who seek ways to bring sustainable water to those who do not have it and for advocates who seek to protect the universal right to have clean sufficient water for all We pray

For humility to see all the ways we take water for granted we pray

For guidance on how we can be better stewards of water, we pray.
