St. John Eudes
St. John Eudes laid the foundation for a mission that continues to transform lives today. His compassion for women in difficult circumstances led to the founding of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, later expanded worldwide through the Good Shepherd mission by St. Mary Euphrasia.
Called to Serve
Born November 14, 1601, in Normandy, France, John Eudes felt called to serve God from a young age. After studies with the Jesuits, he joined the Oratory and was ordained in 1625. Known for his courage and compassion, he ministered to the sick during the plague, often at great personal risk.

A Heart for Others
As a missionary preacher, John Eudes traveled across France, renewing faith and encountering women facing poverty and injustice. Moved by their suffering, he founded a refuge in Caen in 1641, offering safety and hope. This became the beginning of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity.

Founder and Visionary
John Eudes gave the sisters a fourth vow—“zeal for the salvation of souls”—calling them to share God’s compassion. He also founded the Eudists in 1643 to form priests and promoted devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, emphasizing God’s love and mercy.
